Janice’s Maynard and Lowery families are people of the Bass Strait Islands,
including Flinders and Cape Barren Islands.
As a Truwulway Pakana Tasmanian Aboriginal artist, Janice’s practice is deeply
connected to Lutruwita milaythina—Tasmanian Country. Her work explores the
enduring relationships between people, Country and place, grounded in the
understanding that Country is living, holds memory and continues to share its
stories.
Inspired by Country, Ancestors, family and Community, Janice works predominantly
in watercolour, weaving patterns, stories and cultural connections that reflect the
interconnectedness of all life within Country.
Janice’s artwork shared with the Palawa Business Hub is named Milaythina muka widthi
— Saltwater Country Day — uses circular forms to symbolise life cycles and
language held within Country across deep time.
Janice has collaborated with Aunty Theresa Sainty on the Woolstore Native Garden
interpretation, sharing the ancestral story of Lala, the ant who forged the pathway for
the Hobart Rivulet to meet the waters of Timtumili Minanya. Her artworks are also
featured in the Burnie Arts Centre ArtCade.
Through art, storytelling and cultural practice, Janice continues to honour her
Ancestors, family and Community, creating opportunities for people to connect with
Lutruwita through strong Pakana knowledge and lived experience.
